1969 Gibson Byrdland

The Byrdland was originally designed with input from Billy Byrd and Hank Garland as a slimmer, faster-playing archtop. It has the model's characteristic short 23.5 "scale and narrow body, which makes it feel noticeably more compact and comfortable than most full-size jazz archtops. The carried spruce top and laminated maple back and sides give it the warm, articulate tone the model is known for, with a bit more focus and clarity than large reserve bodies. This example retains the classic Byrdland look: beautiful and light sunburn (Iced Tea Sunburn) multi-ply binding throughout, split-block inlay, and gold hardware. The original humbukers deliver the clear, smooth voice you'd expect from lat- '60s Gibson pickups - great for jazz, but equally capable of warm blues or clean chord work. What sets this guitar apart historically is that it was made in Kalamazoo before Gibson production fully shifted under Norlin management and before the later Nashville was instruments. Many players feel these lat- '60s Kalamazoo guitars still reflect the older Gibson approach to building hold bodies. Overall, it's a well-preserved example of a classic model from the end of Gibson's Kalamazoo period - an interesting piece for someone who appreciates both the playability of the Byrdland design and the history behind where it was built.
